St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Indianapolis, Indiana, was established in 1962 by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis to serve the rapidly growing west side of the city. The new parish was formed from portions of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Monica, and St. Christopher parishes as residential development brought many young Catholic families to the area. Ground was broken soon after its founding, and the parish community initially worshiped in what was intended to be a temporary church structure built near the planned school site. Despite being considered temporary, that worship space served parishioners for nearly five decades and became the spiritual home where generations were baptized, married, and mourned.

From its earliest years, the parish placed strong emphasis on Catholic education, establishing St. Gabriel School as a central part of parish life and community identity. As the surrounding neighborhood evolved, so did the parish. What began as a largely suburban congregation gradually became more culturally diverse, welcoming African-American, Filipino, and later a significant Hispanic community, leading to bilingual liturgies and multicultural celebrations that reflected the changing face of west Indianapolis. In 2010, as part of archdiocesan planning efforts, St. Gabriel School merged with nearby St. Michael the Archangel School to continue Catholic education collaboratively in the area.

A major milestone in parish history came in 2010–2011 when long-awaited renovations transformed the original worship space into a fully redesigned and permanent church. The sanctuary was reconfigured, sacred art and stained glass were added, and the building was beautified to better reflect Catholic liturgical tradition. On February 6, 2011, the renovated church was solemnly dedicated by Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, marking the first formal consecration of the parish church since its founding. In 2013, the parish celebrated its 50th anniversary with bilingual liturgies and festivities that honored its founders and recognized the many families who built and sustained the community. Today, St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish continues its mission of worship, service, and evangelization, rooted in its history of growth, adaptability, and faithful commitment to the people of Indianapolis.
